Hedging places a second bet on the opposite side of an open position to lock in a result. Use it to secure a guaranteed profit on a bet that has moved your way, or to reduce the loss on one that has moved against you.
How to use it
Enter your original stake and odds.
Enter the current odds available on the other side (at a bookmaker or exchange).
Read the hedge stake to place and your guaranteed profit whichever side wins.
Worked example. You backed a team at $100 on odds 3.00 and they reach the final. With the other outcome now priced 1.80, staking about $167 on it locks in roughly $33 profit no matter who wins.
Hedging trades a bigger potential win for certainty. It is the same maths as laying a bet on an exchange, which the back/lay calculator handles for matched betting. See also arbitrage betting.
Frequently asked questions
When should I hedge a bet?
Hedge when locking in a certain outcome is worth more to you than the variance of letting the bet ride, for example on a live futures ticket that has shortened, or to guarantee a matched betting result.
Does hedging guarantee profit?
Only if the combined prices allow it. If the market has moved in your favour since your original bet, a hedge can lock in profit. If not, it minimises loss rather than guaranteeing a win.
Is hedging the same as arbitrage?
The maths is similar, but arbitrage places both sides at nearly the same time to exploit a pricing gap, while hedging adds a second bet later to a position you already hold.
