Odds Comparison Australia

Odds comparison means checking the price of the same bet across many bookmakers and taking the highest one. Every extra cent of price is extra value on a winning bet, so line shopping is the simplest edge in betting. DegenToPro compares live odds across 100+ Australian bookmakers so you always know where the best price is.

Odds comparison (also called line shopping or getting the best odds in Australia) is the practice of comparing the price offered by different bookmakers on exactly the same market, then placing your bet where the payout is highest. It is not a tip or a system, it is a discipline: the same $50 bet returns more money at $2.10 than it does at $2.00, for identical risk. DegenToPro automates this by scanning odds across 100+ AU bookmakers, including Sportsbet, TAB, Bet365, Ladbrokes and Neds, so you can see the best price at a glance and never leave value on the table.

Why comparing odds matters (best price = more EV)

Expected value (EV) is the long-run average result of a bet. When you back the same selection at a higher price, you are paid more every time it wins while your risk stays the same, so your EV goes up directly. This is the cleanest way to add value in betting because it does not require you to predict outcomes any better. You are simply refusing to accept a worse price for the same product.

Bookmakers do not price markets identically. They differ in the margin they build in, in how they react to money coming in, and in which teams or runners they want to lay off. On a single match one book might have the favourite at $1.85 while another sits at $1.95. That 10 cent gap is roughly 5% of the stake in extra payout, and 5% is a bigger edge than most bettors ever generate from selection alone. Consistently taking the top price is what turns a break-even punter into a profitable one, and it makes an already sharp strategy such as value betting or EV betting materially stronger.

The catch is speed. Prices move, and the best price you see now may be gone in minutes. That is why a live comparison view matters more than manually flicking between five bookmaker apps: you want the best number surfaced instantly so you can act on it while it is still available.

A line-shopping worked example

Say you have decided to back the same team to win an NRL match at a $50 stake. Five Australian bookmakers are pricing the market slightly differently. Here is what the same bet returns at each price.

Bookmaker Decimal odds Stake Total return if it wins Profit
Bookmaker A 2.00 $50.00 $100.00 $50.00
Bookmaker B 2.05 $50.00 $102.50 $52.50
Bookmaker C 2.08 $50.00 $104.00 $54.00
Bookmaker D (best price) 2.12 $50.00 $106.00 $56.00
Bookmaker E 1.98 $50.00 $99.00 $49.00

Taking Bookmaker D at $2.12 instead of Bookmaker A at $2.00 pays an extra $6 on this single winning bet, and $7 more than the worst price on the board. That is a 12% swing in profit for zero extra risk. Now scale it up. If you place 500 bets a year at a $50 average stake and line shopping earns you just 3% more on the price on average, that is around $750 of additional value over the year that you would otherwise have handed to the bookmaker. Nothing about your selections changed. You just stopped accepting the first price you saw.

This is why line shopping is often described as free EV. It requires no model, no edge in prediction, and no extra bankroll. It only requires that you check the best price before you bet, and that you hold enough accounts to actually take it.

Bookmaker margins and overround (how the built-in edge works)

Every bookmaker builds a profit margin into its prices, known as the overround (or the vig). If a two-way market were priced fairly, the two decimal prices would imply probabilities that add up to exactly 100%. Bookmakers shorten the prices so the implied probabilities add up to more than 100%, and that extra slice is their built-in edge.

You can see it with a quick calculation. The implied probability of a decimal price is 1 divided by the odds. Take a market priced at $1.90 each way:

Selection Decimal odds Implied probability (1 / odds)
Team 1 1.90 52.6%
Team 2 1.90 52.6%
Total (overround) 105.2%

The 5.2% above 100% is the overround: the bookmaker's theoretical edge on that market. A book with a lower margin might price the same match at $1.95 each way, which is an overround of about 102.6%. That tighter margin is exactly why line shopping works. Different books charge different amounts of overround, and by taking the best price on each leg you are effectively buying from whichever bookmaker is charging you the least on that selection. Comparing odds is, in practical terms, comparing margins one price at a time. If you want to go deeper on how the vig is calculated and removed, the spoke guide below on bookmaker margin and overround walks through it step by step.

Getting started

You can start comparing odds in a few minutes:

  1. Open accounts with a spread of major AU bookmakers. Holding several of Sportsbet, TAB, Bet365, Ladbrokes and Neds means that when a standout price appears you can actually take it.
  2. Create a free DegenToPro account. No card is required to start, so you can see the odds comparison tool in action straight away.
  3. Compare before every bet. Once you have chosen a selection, check the comparison view and take the best price on the board rather than the first one you saw.
  4. Track your bets. Log each bet and let the bet tracker measure your closing line value, so you can confirm over time that line shopping is genuinely beating the market.

Bet responsibly. Odds comparison improves the price you get, but no strategy removes risk from betting and value betting is a long-run edge, not a guaranteed return. Only bet what you can afford to lose. Help is available on 1800 858 858. 18+ only.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best odds comparison site in Australia?

The best odds comparison tool is the one that scans the most licensed Australian bookmakers, updates in near real time, and lets you act on the best price quickly. DegenToPro compares odds across 100+ AU bookmakers, including Sportsbet, TAB, Bet365, Ladbrokes and Neds, and pairs that with a bet tracker so you can see whether you consistently beat the closing line.

Does line shopping really make a difference?

Yes. Taking $2.10 instead of $2.00 on the same selection is a 5% higher payout on every winning bet. Over hundreds of bets that difference compounds and is often the gap between a long-run edge and a slow loss. It costs nothing beyond a few seconds to check the best price before you bet.

How many bookmaker accounts should I have?

There is no fixed number, but line shopping only works if you can actually take the best price you find. Most serious Australian bettors hold accounts with several of the major books (for example Sportsbet, TAB, Bet365, Ladbrokes and Neds) plus a few others, so that when the comparison tool highlights a standout price they can bet it immediately.

Is odds comparison free?

DegenToPro has a free tier with no card required to start, so you can begin comparing odds without paying. Paid plans (Weekly, Monthly and Lifetime) add more tools and are currently 20% off under the live World Cup Offer.

Is odds comparison legal in Australia?

Yes. Comparing odds and choosing the bookmaker with the best price is completely legal in Australia, and for recreational bettors gambling winnings are generally not taxed under current ATO treatment. This is general information, not formal legal or tax advice.
